Donna Parker Dress

Ever since I was a tender, young bookworm of ten or so, I have wanted a dress like Donna Parker's in Mystery at Arawak. So when fifties-style dresses started becoming fashionable again, I got excited. Of course, since I committed myself more than a year ago to never buying clothing new (for ethical and environmental reasons), all I could really do was watch the racks and sigh, and hope a dress in my size showed up in a thrift store. Then the McCalls pattern company emailed me: would I like to buy a vintage 1950s dress pattern for only $3.00?

Would I!

When the pattern came in the mail, I was ecstatic. I showed it to my Mom the next time I saw her.
"I think Gran has that same pattern somewhere," she remarked.

It took me a long time to get down to the business of sewing the dress, and when I did I had to alter the pattern (I hate sewing from patterns!)... and then the lining didn't fit... and then my sewing machine broke... but I was determined the dress should be wearable for fall, so last night I was up with my needle and thread until one o'clock. And here it is! It's kind of a big deal for me, so I had some fun with the photography.

I'm loving this! How often do we get to see our childhood dreams come true?
